Remembering Old Fashioned Mail…

How many of you still use old fashioned mail? I never ever thought I would be calling it that, and maybe that will be another one of my you heard it here first Rocqueizms. Maybe there will be a Wikipedia one day on my Rocqueizms. I better find a nice photo of me for when I get famous. I will get one from a frame at WalMart. :)

Back to the topic. Today’s Encouragement Quote is from me (I hope it is original). When you want to suprise someone and really make their day 100% GREAT, send them a letter or card that you have to actually put in an envelope with a stamp on it. None of this online Hallmark card stuff for now. That is not part of this quote. My encouragement quotes sometimes have rules with them.

I have made several friends on the internet over the years, and some of my closest friends are from back in the day when I was really involved in an online game. I have played a few and still play a couple. Believe it or not they taught me a lot about life on the internet.

I have seen friends go through high school and some through college or universities, and there are a handful that I still keep in contact with. Just this week I was so surprised to get a real hand written letter from one of them. I am still thrilled about that. I am not sure if that means a lot to anyone reading this, but it reminds me of how one simple act like that just brightened my whole week. It might have brightened my whole month (it is still early though).

Sometimes words of encouragement are unspoken. They are acts of kindness. What can you do to brighten someone’s day? When was the last time you send out a real letter? I know now it is getting closer to .50 for postage, but to be able to cheer someone up for under a dollar is pretty great.

If your life is so hectic and you feel you do not have time to do this, I guess an online card is the next best thing for you to use. However I think using old fashioned mail once in a while to let someone know that you cared enough to take some time to sent a few words is very encouraging in this day.

In one of my next posts I will explore how to send some encouragement to the military men and women serving for us. Please do not forget them, and if you feel like sending something to them to cheer them up and let them know they are not forgotten, that will be awesome.

I sometimes resort to the online cards, but most of the time it is the old fashioned cardboard card in an envelope. That is how I prefer getting cards, so I obviously need to send them that way :P

And a huge THANKS to all our veterans, those serving now as well as those who served and sometimes gave their lives for our freedom.

You are so full of lovely and insightful thoughts. I do send cards from time to time and I know how much it means to me when someone sends one my way. After reading your post I realised how simple this act of thoughtfulness is and that I should make the effort to do it more often. Thank you…

A freind of mine used to have a picture of Einstien over his desk and the caption was “it’s the thought that counts” I’ll always remember that because he would look at it and thoughts came to him to call a freind or make a date to see his old aunt.

The thought does count but the action that follows is what really matters. Sending a real hand written card is a great idea

You just nailed it. I haven’t sent a real letter since the mid-90′s. I actually think nothing compares to a written letter, but why is it that I have relied exclusively on email, ecards, facebook and twitter to keep up with my beloved family and friends? Maybe because getting to the post office in DC is a total pain! LOL

Seriously, I do send packages – special stuff, like care packages, and CD’s and DVD’s which I mail off, but I haven’t written a letter to a family member or friend in more than 15 years. I need to get out the pen and paper and use the ol’ John Hancock. Thanks for the inspiration.

Isn’t it funny when you author the blog post and you title it but then when you revisit your blog and you see the title you wonder what you wrote. It is not that I am getting forgetful (where is my vitamin B12?), but it is just that to me this title looks like Remembering Old Fashioned Mall. I see that and that first “i” is looking too much like an “l”. It will be only a few more days until my new glasses arrive. LOL.

I think that now more than ever a hand-written mailed letter has that much more impact than an email or a tweet or any other form of communication, because it is RARE! It is so much more personal and whoever is on the other end has to acknowledge the fact that the sender put in extra effort to make his communication stand out. This is one of the reasons the etiquette dictates sending thank-you cards (and not thank-you emails)!
