Yep, criticism is something that comes naturally to most but should certainly be handed out in controlled portions. One should always put themselves in the shoes of others and carefully think of how they present it.

I don't think we really understand how powerful our words are. what we think and talk about in our minds can greatly affect how are lives turn out. What we say to others can greatly affect our their lives turn out. Good post thanks

Thanks for the great replies to this post.
I agree about using the words of encouragement instead of criticism when teaching anyone to do something new.
Can you all remember learning to drive? Many parents have now found out it is easier to let a professional teach it.

Children face enough criticism throughout their day and I feel that the home should be an area of encouragement. If a child is put down at school and then comes home to face more, that is going to cause some deep wounds.

When I taught swimming there were several little children who were so afraid to let go of the side of the pool. They would say, "My mother told me I would drown."

I could go on and on here with stories, but I am sure you have your own.

How many grocery baggers ever hear a "thank you, you did a great job and I appreciate that"? Make sure you mention this if they did not put the bread under the canned goods. :o)

Oops I forgot I was ending this.

Thanks again for taking the time to comment.

It is so easy for most of us to be critical rather than encouraging and many have fallen into that pattern without even realizing it. Of course I don't always succeed in this, but I try to be positive and upbeat even when I don't feel that way...often catching a look of surprise on people's faces when they hear an encouraging word. How much more quickly that little girl would learn to ride her bike if her mother taught her to believe she could do anything!!

I was outside in my yard today and was watching a neighbor trying to teach her daughter to ride a bike without training wheels. She was not using very encouraging words with her. I wish I had her email address to send her this post.

I think it takes time to really know who we are and be comfortable with that. When we're young we know it all (or so we think) and for the most part are not afraid of trying new things. Then we may fail a few times or as you say get criticized for trying or get told that our dreams are not attainable. That's when the self doubt creaps in and takes hold. We are all a work in progress and having possitive influences in our lives keeps us going and wanting to try new things. This blog is one of those positive influences for me. Two great messages is this post.
To answer your question “What would you attempt to do if you knew you would not fail?” I would try anything that came to mind.
To be honest though - if we don't fail at all do we really learn from our experiences. Failing is not always a bad thing
Thanks for the great post
