Encouragement Quotes and Criticism

Today’s Encouragement Quote:
“Think twice before you speak, because your words and influence will plant the seed of either success or failure in the mind of another.”
Authored by: Napoleon Hill
I have to admit the I was inspired to write this post after I read another blog post about criticism written by Joel Comm, and here is the link to that post. It is titled Dealing With Criticism
I thought it was an excellent read, and it really got me to thinking about how several people are so fast to criticize others, and they seem to do it without taking the time to think about the reactions or the hurt that their criticism might cause.
Perhaps there is no harm meant in the criticism but, we should always think before we offer a hurtful opinion. Even when it is asked for, we should think before we say something we might regret later.
Another encouragement quote is by the Reverend Schuller is the one that reads:
What would you attempt to do if you knew you could not fail?
Just think about that for a few moments. Are there or were there dream stealers in your life? How did you feel when someone told you that your dream was not realistic, or you did not have what it took to get there?
Sometimes we can be our own worst friend too. Listen to how you speak to yourself. That inner voice that talks to you. Are you a good or bad self critic? Some of us think that if we applaud ourself or speak confidence to our self that is somehow wrong. How many of you were brought up to believe that?
It has taken me years to realize that I have to be my own best friend. It took a lot of reading, and meeting the right people to help me with this. Do not be your biggest stumbling block! Sometimes this is easier to tell someone than to do.
How do you start? Practice really listening to what you say to other people, and what you say to yourself. Any time you hear that negative talk, replace it. Once you realize what you are doing it is pretty easy to make a habit of getting more positive.
In the words of Dr. Schuller again, “What would you attempt to do if you knew you would not fail?”

I think it takes time to really know who we are and be comfortable with that. When we’re young we know it all (or so we think) and for the most part are not afraid of trying new things. Then we may fail a few times or as you say get criticized for trying or get told that our dreams are not attainable. That’s when the self doubt creaps in and takes hold. We are all a work in progress and having possitive influences in our lives keeps us going and wanting to try new things. This blog is one of those positive influences for me. Two great messages is this post.
To answer your question “What would you attempt to do if you knew you would not fail?” I would try anything that came to mind.
To be honest though – if we don’t fail at all do we really learn from our experiences. Failing is not always a bad thing

I was outside in my yard today and was watching a neighbor trying to teach her daughter to ride a bike without training wheels. She was not using very encouraging words with her. I wish I had her email address to send her this post.

It is so easy for most of us to be critical rather than encouraging and many have fallen into that pattern without even realizing it. Of course I don’t always succeed in this, but I try to be positive and upbeat even when I don’t feel that way…often catching a look of surprise on people’s faces when they hear an encouraging word. How much more quickly that little girl would learn to ride her bike if her mother taught her to believe she could do anything!!

Thanks for the great replies to this post.
I agree about using the words of encouragement instead of criticism when teaching anyone to do something new.
Can you all remember learning to drive? Many parents have now found out it is easier to let a professional teach it.
Children face enough criticism throughout their day and I feel that the home should be an area of encouragement. If a child is put down at school and then comes home to face more, that is going to cause some deep wounds.
When I taught swimming there were several little children who were so afraid to let go of the side of the pool. They would say, “My mother told me I would drown.”
I could go on and on here with stories, but I am sure you have your own.
How many grocery baggers ever hear a “thank you, you did a great job and I appreciate that”? Make sure you mention this if they did not put the bread under the canned goods.

Oops I forgot I was ending this.
Thanks again for taking the time to comment.
I don’t think we really understand how powerful our words are. what we think and talk about in our minds can greatly affect how are lives turn out. What we say to others can greatly affect our their lives turn out. Good post thanks

Yep, criticism is something that comes naturally to most but should certainly be handed out in controlled portions. One should always put themselves in the shoes of others and carefully think of how they present it.
